School of Humanities and Foreign Languages

The School of Humanities and Foreign Languages of Xi'an University of Technology was established in July 2009. Its predecessor was the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, which was formed in March 1996 through the merger of the former Department of Social Sciences and the Department of Foreign Language Education. The school offers three majors for bachelor’s degree: English, Japanese, and Law. The English has been selected as the national first‑class demonstration point for the bachelor’s degree. It is authorized to confer master’s degree program in the Foreign Language and Literature (first‑level discipline), as well as professional degree programs in Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) and Juris Master (JM). The first-level discipline of Foreign Language and Literature has been approved as the construction project of a distinctive discipline platform for national high-level universities.

The school comprises 4 departments, 2 teaching divisions, 3 institutes, 3 centers, and 1 testing station: Department of English, Department of Japanese, Department of Law, Department of Chinese, Teaching Division of College Foreign languages, Institute of Scientific and Technical English Translation, Institute of Language and Literature, Institute of Legal Studies, Comprehensive Language Laboratory Center, MTI Education Center, JM Education Center, and the Provincial Mandarin Proficiency Testing Station. It currently has 126 faculties, including 113 full-time teachers, 4 professors, and 42 associate professors, with 1 provincial teaching master, 1 provincial exemplar of teacher ethics, and 1 provincial model teacher in ideological and political theory courses; in addition, it has 6 adjunct professors and 3 foreign experts. The Department of Foreign Language Education has been awarded the provincial title of “Women’s Exemplary Post.”

The school actively promotes interdisciplinary integration and innovation, and has achieved notable achievements in teaching reform, project applications, and academic publishing. Over the past five years, the school has led 5 NSSFC Projects (National Social Science Fund of China), 1 National Foreign Expert Project, 3 Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Sciences Fund Projects, 5 “Chinese Bridge” Projects funded by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC), Ministry of Education, 38 provincial-level projects such as the Shaanxi Provincial Social Science Fund and Shaanxi Provincial Major Theoretical and Practical Research Projects, and 16 department‑ and bureau‑level projects such as Xi’an Social Science Planning Fund. school members have published more than 200 academic papers, including 36 in core journals such as SSCI and CSSCI, and have produced more than 10 academic monographs, translations, and textbooks. The school has won 1 Third Prize for Outstanding Research Achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences in Shaanxi Province, 1 Third Prize for Outstanding Humanities and Social Sciences Research Achievements in Shaanxi Universities, 1 Second Prize and 2 Third Prizes for Outstanding Philosophy and Social Sciences Achievements in Xi’an. It has also received approval for 2 provincial-level teaching reform projects, established 1 provincial-level featured course and 2 provincial-level model courses for ideological and political education, and built 2 provincial-level teaching teams in this area.

The school has established sound exchange and cooperative relationships with well-known overseas universities, including Eastern New Mexico University, University of Missouri–Kansas City, Waseda University, University of Fukui, and Kansai Gaidai University, providing platforms for school and students to engage in academic visits, coursework, and summer internships.
