Shaanxi Institute of Machinery (Xi’an University of Technology) had established China’s first major in “Printing Machinery” in 1974. The faculty currently serves as an executive council member of the China Printing and Equipment Industry Association and the China Printing Technology Association, and is a member unit of the Teaching Steering Committee for Light‑Industry Majors under the Ministry of Education. The faculty offers 3 majors for bachelor’s degree: Printing Engineering, Packaging Engineering, and Digital Media Technology, and hosts a doctoral degree program in the Printing and Packaging Technology and Equipment (second‑level discipline), 3 academic master’s degree programs in Light Industry Technology and Engineering, Signal and Information Processing, and Mechanical Engineering (second‑level discipline), and 2 professional master’s degree programs in Materials and Chemical Engineering and Electronic Information Engineering, forming a a complete “bachelor - master - doctoral” training system.
The faculty has 121 faculty members, including 96 full‑time teachers, of whom 14 are professors and 32 are associate professors; over 80% of the faculties hold doctoral degrees and have overseas experience. It includes 2 recipients of national talent programs and 1 recipient of the Ministry of Education’s “Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University”, among other honors, and a total of 16 members and alumni have received the Bi Sheng Award. The faculty has achieved strong teaching achievements, including 1 Second Prize for National Teaching Achievement, and has developed 4 national first‑class undergraduate courses. The Printing Engineering is designated a national first‑class major for bachelor’s degree and has passed engineering accreditation; the Packaging Engineering is also designated a national first‑class major. In the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), the Printing Engineering has received an “A+” rating for five consecutive years, the Digital Media Technology is rated “A”, and the Packaging Engineering is rated “B+”. Its laboratory center is designated as a Shaanxi Provincial Demonstration Center for Laboratory Teaching.
Research outputs have grown significantly: The faculty has undertaken more than 100 projects at provincial and ministerial above, including those from the National Natural Science Foundation and the National Key R&D Program, received over 50 industry awards such as the Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, been granted more than 300 invention patents, and published over 1,300 high‑quality papers. In addition, it hosts 1 provincial key innovation team, 3 provincial platforms including the Shaanxi Key Laboratory of Printing and Packaging Engineering, and 1 Xi’an key laboratory.
International cooperation began with a partnership with the Stuttgart Media University (Germany) in 1985; the Sino‑German dual‑degree program launched in 1999 was recognized by the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) as one of the best Sino‑German educational cooperation projects; in recent years, the faculty has also collaborated with institutions such as Norwegian University of Science and Technology and Chiba University in Japan.
