As a National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, the Engineering Training Center, Xi'an University of Technology currently serves as the Deputy Director of the Engineering Training Teaching Steering Committee in Higher Education, and as the executive vice-chairman unit of the Maker Education Base Alliance. The center has been designated as a National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Practice Base, a National University Practice Education Innovation and Entrepreneurship Base, and Shaanxi labor education practice base for higher education institutions as well as primary and secondary schools. The center’s “XUT–Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship Hub” is a national high-tech business incubator and is also recognized as Shaanxi Provincial makerspace as well as Xi’an makerspace.
The center occupies 17,000 m² of floor space and holds equipment valued at over RMB 40 million. It currently has 86 faculties (including 3 professors, 3 associate professors, 17 senior engineers, and 1 national master technician). Annually, the center completes planned practical teaching tasks for more than 4,000 participants, accumulating over 400,000 lab student-hours. Adhering to a modern educational philosophy that balances the coordinated development and comprehensive improvement of “knowledge, skills, and qualities”, the center embraces a practice teaching reform philosophy of “student-centered, strengthening fundamentals, emphasizing comprehensiveness, and valuing individual development”. It has established a multi-level, multi-module comprehensive engineering training system composed of “a foundational engineering training course cluster, an integrated engineering technology practice course cluster, a specialized technical course cluster, and an innovation & entrepreneurship course cluster”.
Currently, the center has hosted 16 undergraduate innovation and entrepreneurship clubs such as a model aircraft club, a deep-sea robotics research club, and an automotive club, and has pre-incubated 21 student-founded start-ups. In recent years, by promoting maker culture and fostering an innovation and entrepreneurship atmosphere characterized by “open sharing and collaboration”, the center has laid a solid foundation for student innovation and entrepreneurship activities.
