The History Museum of Xi'an University of Technology chronicles the university's century-long development journey, with its roots tracing back to 1919 and the school anniversary falling on May 1st, marking the founding of the National Beiping Senior Industrial Vocational School in 1946. The university's development can be summed up in eight words: Origins in Beijing, Foundation in Shaanxi.
Its Beijing origin evolved from three institutions—the Beiping Municipal Public Commercial Supplementary School (1919), National Beiping Senior Industrial Vocational School (1946), and Beijing Cadre School of the First Ministry of Machinery Industry— which merged to form Beijing Institute of Machinery in 1958. Later, the institute relocated to Hanzhong, Shaanxi in 1969 for war preparedness, laying the foundation of the university's spirit of self-improvement.
The Shaanxi origin started in 1937, when national universities including National Peking University moved west to Xi'an and established Xi'an Temporary University. Shaanxi Technological University was founded in 1960, a comprehensive technological university serving local industrial and agricultural development in Shaanxi and the northwest China.
In January 1972, Beijing Institute of Machinery and Shaanxi Technological University merged to form Shaanxi Institute of Machinery, which was officially renamed Xi'an University of Technology in January 1994 with the approval of the State Education Commission, growing into a high-level comprehensive university focusing on engineering, with coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as science, management, literature and law.
The museum is divided into several chapters including Origins and Development, Merger, Development and Achievements, displaying precious cultural relics, historical photos, and scientific research achievements. Highlights include the educational bell of the Beiping Municipal Senior Commercial Vocational School, the TDR series single crystal furnaces (China's first silicon single crystal drawing equipment independently developed by the university), and cultural relics unearthed during the construction of the Qujiang Campus, such as the digitally restored Tang Dynasty princess crown ornaments.
It also showcases the university's remarkable achievements in education, scientific research and talent cultivation: 10 national characteristic majors, multiple disciplines ranking in the top 1% of ESI global rankings, the National Key Laboratory of Eco-Environment in Water Engineering in Arid Areas, and two Huang Danian-style Teaching Teams recognized by the country. The university has established cooperative relations with more than 80 universities and research institutions worldwide, and founded the International School of Engineering, the first Sino-foreign cooperative education institution with undergraduate, master's and doctoral programs in central and western China.
A special highlight in the museum is the conference table used during the signing of the Boxer Protocol, a precious relic reminding students of the school motto Motherland, Honor, Responsibility. The museum embodies the university's century-old spirit of hard work and self-improvement, and records its unremitting efforts in serving national development and local construction.
