On August 15, ShanghaiRanking, a leading global higher education evaluation organization, officially released the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). The ranking lists the world's top 1,000 research universities. A total of 234 universities from the Chinese mainland were included, among which 16 ranked among the global top 100, an increase of three compared with last year. This reflects the continuous improvement of Chinese universities in academic strength and international influence. Xi'an University of Technology (XUT) ranked 501–600 globally and tied for 7th among universities in Shaanxi Province.
Xi'an University of Technology is among the first national pilot universities for comprehensive reform in higher education under the initiative to build China into a leading country in education. It is also a selected university under the national Revitalization Plan for Higher Education in Central and Western China, a university jointly supported by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Shaanxi Province, a high-level university prioritized for development in Shaanxi Province, and a provincial university cultivated for China's national “Double First-Class” initiative. The University is one of China's important bases for cultivating high-level specialized talents and conducting scientific research in the fields of water conservancy and hydropower, as well as equipment manufacturing.
The University has consistently taken disciplinary development as the leading priority and has steadily advanced first-class discipline construction, with its core competitiveness continuously enhanced. XUT has a strong foundation in graduate education. It began enrolling graduate students in 1960 and was approved by the State Council in 1981 as one of the first institutions in China authorized to confer doctoral and master's degrees. The Graduate School was established in 2011. The University currently has 15 first-level doctoral degree authorization disciplines, four professional doctoral degree authorization categories, 27 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines, and 13 professional master's degree authorization categories. These cover nine disciplinary categories, including engineering, science, management, economics, law, literature, agriculture, arts, and interdisciplinary studies, forming a discipline structure with engineering as the main focus and coordinated development across multiple disciplines. XUT has one national key first-level discipline, 21 key disciplines of Shaanxi Province, and 12 advantageous disciplines of Shaanxi Province. Eight disciplines, namely Engineering, Materials Science, Environment/Ecology, Computer Science, Chemistry, Agricultural Sciences, Geosciences, and Physics, rank among the top 1% globally in ESI. Among them, Engineering has entered the top 1‰ globally in ESI. In the 2026 ShanghaiRanking Best Chinese Universities Ranking, XUT ranked 111th.
Over the years, the University has carried forward the spirit of “hard work and perseverance,” upheld the motto of “Motherland, Honor, and Responsibility,” and adhered to the educational philosophy of “student-centered education and the unity of knowledge and practice.” It has cultivated nearly 300,000 professionals of various fields, including members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, senior Party and government officials, and outstanding entrepreneurs. XUT has made important contributions to national and local economic development, particularly to the advancement of China's water conservancy and hydropower, and equipment manufacturing industries. Focusing on the comprehensive improvement of quality, the University has continuously strengthened connotative development, with its educational level and social reputation steadily enhanced.
